I haven't even plugged in the Sun yet...

I'm still thinking whether to get another 2 hdams for my headphone amp out but not sure what the combo should be...

dac = earth , headamp = 2 X moon
dac = sun , headamp = 2 X earth
dac = earth , headamp = 2 X moon
dac = earth, headamp = 2 X sun (this is the most unlikely combo i think)



I listen to a wide variety of music from vocals, RnB, trance, instrumental, jazz
Anyone with any suggestions?

if use 3 discrete opamp tegether in Zero i think u need to mod the power source is it?

It's advise to mod the power source if plug in 3 discrete opamps, cos some headfier reported that the bass loss some punch with three discrete opamp inside the DAC Since you are planning to get a dedicated headamp for your Darth Beyer, i think EARTH in the DAC + LT1364 in the headamp should be ok but of course it might be abit bright

I guess with MOON in the DAC + LT1364 in the headamp is better, cos the AD1852 sound's belongs to the PRaT category, bright n lean with MOON's slight thick tonal might balance it ... sometimes I find the EARTH inside DAC abit thin for vocal, that's why I'm getting the MOON trying to give more depth and body to the music

Added on September 17, 2008, 11:29 pmstormspider, based on the Zero group from Head-Fi's feedback, it seems that Earth in DAC and Suns in Headamp is the best combination so far. Seems that most of them agree that the DAC should have a neutral opamp so that it's more balanced and then tune your sound preference at the headamp. Most also agree that the LT1364 at the headamp is already very listenable for the price but paying more for the Suns would have it's return as well.

I remember that you were the one who tested between optical and coax and reported you couldn't hear any discerning difference right? I did the same with the stock toslink cable vs. Monster Digital and found no real difference... yet. Maybe my Zero needs to be completely burned in and upgraded to OPA before I can hear anything... but your Canare Abel should be better than the long thin cable that came with the USB converter from GodLuv.

wut i found digital coax n toslink different is :

toslink - sound abit dry n digital

coax - more smoother sound

i tested the stock choseal optical cable with canare coax cable....

i had them both plugged in at the same time from the same source (Maya44).

tested by switching using the front buttons....no difference...




but a colleague of mine who borrowed the choseal....tried it on his PS3+samsung HTiB... then he bought an RM200 philips optical. he said the difference is huge.

I believe the source makes a difference as well. It's well known that certain manufacturers like Marantz and Philips places more emphasis on the Coax section than others, hence the smoother sound for Abel.

Stock optical vs Philips optical: a lot of users shared that a high quality glass type fiber can make a big difference against the cheap plastic fiber so I need to swap the current stock with my Audioquest to compare too! Thanks for sharing!

i got my optical from all IT lowyat
it is chinese brand but about 2x thicker than the stock zero provided
after AB testing i found the original smoother but lesser detail
the i buy from all IT much more atk and more detail but a bit harsh when match with not fully burn in zero
for me i think optic cable can make the changes
but i dint try the coax cable cause my computer has only optic out~

Anyone one paid and status are not updated?

Today did some upgrade for the ZERO DAC.

First thing I do, remove the original Gucci RCA and replace with the RCA (free gift from Mr He). Next put the connecting wire using Silver cable. This tiny silver cable is thinner than hair and so flimsy.

Next solder a wire to the RCA ground and connect OPA earth ground to this wire.

Put on the volume, connect the Volex 17604 (corrected to British polarity) and off the ZERO dac sings.

I was like 'shock' and awe and my jaw was wide open. The sound is more transparent with very good imaging. Worth my day.

When the OPA ground is not connected, I measured some running AC voltage of about 0.15V (floating voltage). Connecting it to ground force it to zero. I prefer to connect the OPA ground to the RCA ground (not to the chasis ground).

wow, i think that silver cable increase the transparency alot .... wow ... makes me hand itchy already! The different is very significant, like the impact of changing opamp?

I notice that you didn't do the BA caps mod to your OPA... is that because you're not using the extension cable?

This RCA is free gift from audio-gd. The RCA feels real solid, which I found on those good quality amplifier RCA connector.

I had a bad experience with ZERO RCA. I once pulled out the RCA cable together with RCA ground plate. (the whole RCA external ground plate came off). So getting a full solid core solid RCA (u can try neutrik from farnell, which is quite cheap)

Silver cable from Octave-electronics, kind of expensive. RM 20 per 1/5 meter.

Remember, silver cable will give u more transparency, higher high, which I need for my system. Handling those thin silver cable is nightmare if u are not skillful.

GL, yes, I agree Silver would place a bit more emphasis on treble. I prefer to have something more neutral like copper. The Neotech cable looks good actually! Take Five Audio also have Cardas Female RCA connectors for CAN$10.95 per pair. Vampire Cryo treated RCA is CAN$16.95. Quite a bit more than Neutrik but I wonder if it's worth it since gonna DIY once and then use for years... Or maybe can check if can bulk from Audio-GD if they're cheaper?

Abel, how does it sound now after burn in? I'm actually arranging to buy the IeGO cable coz they're Cryo treated and have very good review comparable with US$300 cable. But I still need 1 cable for my conditioner... unless I change my wall plate to US-type also...

I think the Neotech should be quite good! OCC copper reported to be detailed yet musical! I think if possible go for copper based RCA female, those two u mentioned are brass based, based on theory the electric conductivity of copper is better than brass, best bang for the buck copper based rca female would be CMC brand - Model 805F, around USD10 per pair

Sound more smoother now but wont expect very huge different now i run-in at my CD-Player i can say not bad for the price ratio.

Vampire has a model that's made using OFC Copper but cost a lot more at CAN$23.95! The CMC at US$10 per pair is a good price comparatively.
