Full Version: 2x1GB Kingston KVR DDR2-800 OC testing

I have recently acquired a pair of 1GB Kingston DDR2-800, found to be ProMOS DDR2 2.5ns chips. We'll see how these cheapo chips fare in overclocking.

The rams... (I'll be testing only a pair)

Although it's a bit hard to identify, by looking at the chips physically... the dimension is not very square There's a tiny brown dot on the bottom left corner, and the chip serial number starting with "S"...can't be a mistake with that serial numbering scheme. For those who do not know, ProMOS, albeit less popular with the overclockers, its chip has been used by some RAM manufacturers in high performance memory modules such as:

- Adata Vitesta PC2-6400 Extreme Edition 4-4-4-12@2.0V
- Adata Vitesta PC2-6400 Extreme Edition (EPP) 4-4-4-12@2.0V
- Corsair PC2-6400 Rev.2.1 4-4-4-12@2.1V
- Corsair PC2-6400C4D DOMINATOR Rev 2.1 & 2.2 4-4-4-12@2.1V
- Corsair PC2-6400C4PRO Rev 2.1 & 2.2
- G.Skill PC2-6400 PK 4-4-4-12@1.9~2.0V
- G.Skill PC2-6400 HK 4-4-3-5@2.0~2.1V
- Kingston PC2-8500 HyperX SLI-Ready
- Mushkin PC2-6400 HP2 4-5-4-11@2.1~2.2V
- OCZ PC2-6400 EL Platinum Rev 2.0 4-4-4-15@1.9~2.1V
- OCZ PC2-6400 Special Ops Edition Urban Elite 4-4-3-15@1.9~2.1V
- OCZ PC2-6400 FlexXLC CAS 4 4-4-4-15@2.0V
- OCZ PC2-6400 Reaper HPC Edition (2x1GB) 4-4-4-15@2.1V
- SuperTalent PC2-6400 4-4-3-8@2.2V
- Team Elite-series
- Team Xtreem Dark-series
- Team PC2-6400 Value RAM
- Transcend PC2-6400 JetRam/aXeRam

OK.... back to these cheap Kingston Value RAM...

Poorman's testing combo:
- AMD Athlon64 3200+
- Abit NF-M2 nView
- Coolermaster HyperTX
- Enermax FMA 460W

No ram cooling because no budget (poor mah!).

Too lazy to test with default voltage, so I straight go with 1.9V. No further tweaking done to the other memory timing settings.

1.9V: DDR2-950 CL5-5-5-15-2T

...more testing coming

nice...

the "S" code ur referring to is the batch code for the chip

btw, possible to take a pic of the front and back of the ram?
soulfly
front and the back is the same i suppose

not all, some of them are different leh..

actually i was interested in what PCB it is using tongue.gif

so, would you please grant my request biggrin.gif

well hynix chips are dead now.. dun buy any hynix now.. the revisions that were good isnt produced anymore..

by the way soulfly bro, u should be able to do 1100-1120Mhz if its promos..it becomes unstable after tat. At 1150 it can run, but fail test. i hope u can.. and with the promos i have tried 5-5-5-12 2T on <1100.

promos is just chips... kingston can use whatever pcd they want.... 6-layer, 4 layer, 1 layer also can.

Not bad leh.Later try oc customer computer with hynix chip(Matching pair) see how.

some of the pcb got write pcb layer at the side

really nice clock @AMD system with value ram
if on intel system over ddr2 1100 might not a problems
mine 4x1gb kingston value with elpida chips ddr2 800 can do also
cl 4-5-5-15 @ddr2 1000 @2.2v on e2140@3.2g

I've checked the PCB, it's just normal Kingston PCB. There's no way Kingston would bother using 6-layer Brainpower PCB on their value ram.
soulfly
I'm letting go this testing set, guarantee DDR2-1000 at rm160.

lol lol brian, suddenly i just remember that i have some of your "secret weapon" too xD

totally didnt remember to test it out with my new board. Should i toast it with 2.9v? brows.gif

@bryan

bila mau release your darling rams la brows.gif test test la bro, then tell us whether can do 1300 not brows.gif

@aoi

would love to do that.. laugh.gif damn, 2.9V. how would that be, a beautiful fireworks display brows.gif

These RAM stocks in my hand already sold out. Probably gonna ask my supplier whether if he still got some more of these. Looks promising. I think my overclocking was a bit limited due to built-in VGA I think... because the screen came out artifacts when I tweak the timing lol!
