Hi,

I am a newbie here. Would like to get advice from all the pro here. Thinking of getting my first dSLR. However, I am undecidable whether should go for Canon or Nikon. Which one is better in term of pic quality, durable and cheaper accessorries. My budget is around RM2k plus and minus. I have done some researches on Nikon D40x. However, there is no built in AF motor for D40x and no built in cleaning system (Are those important?). I haven't got any recommendation for Canon so far. So, all the sifus' out there, please help me.

Thanks in advance.

For you budget, get yourself either a Canon 400D or Nikon D50. Say NO to D40 / D40X, yes, the major disadvantage is no built in AF moto. Dust cleaning system is just some marketing gimmick.

Hi, thank you for your prompt reply. I heard of Nikon D50 before but thought that this is old model. Are you talking about getting second hand D50? Can tell me what is the reason you recommended D50 or 400D? Why say no to D40/x? I thought this model is suitable for beginner since it is not expensive. Please advice. Thanks.

Yea, if you are planning to get a D40/D40x, get a used D50 or D80(if you have sufficient budget). At least they has Autofocus motor. Else you'll have to stick to AF-S lenses and you lens choices would be limited.

Alternatively, you may go for Canon models such as 400D which is better compared to D40x.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will do more research on Canon 400D. Do you know how much is 400D now?

Walk in to the nearest shops and get your hands on the models you are eyeing on or play around with your friend's DSLR before really deciding which one to get smile.gif

me myself owning a nikon D50 think u should go with nikon ..
i have frenz using canon ...i can say nikon is much better even with my D50 megapixel is much lower but the pics are much better
canon is doing great due to massive advertising since it is their aniversary ..
dun go for D40 or D40x..it's just a camera perhaps for students or ppl who are going to use the stock lens forever..

Nikon D50 or higher model is ok

Canon 400D..well you get a 70-200F4 in the canon lens lineup case u want "something better than the 70-300's and the 70-200F2.8 is too expensive"..the 70-200F4 is cheap (relative to the f2.8), L lens summore.

No wonder D40 promotion now only RM2088 (body + lens + tripod + bag + 2GB SD card)

Lucky i did read this tread, because i am also interest of its price

Thanks...... smile.gif

I wonder why ppl always saying D40/40x is bad? Yes, I do agree that the biggest let down of the camera is the lenses compatibility issue which limited to Sigma HSM and Nikkor AFS, but this doesnt refrain it from getting the TIPA's Best DSLR Entry Level Award. In fact , this camera have arroused the interest of many to switch from compact or prosumer camera to DSLR. I'm sure that there are some that will choose this camera over others for its lighter weight, smaller size and its robust build body.

For normal shooting purposes, it should do fine, with the 18-200mm lens, you are pretty much cover everythings! If you want macro, you'll have the Nikkor 105mm VR micro; for fast prime lens, you'll have Sigma 30mm f/1.4; for wide-angle, you'll have Sigma 10-20mm. Though the lenses maybe more expensive, but you'll have the money to spend on the lenses rather on the body.

D80 body + Tamron SP90 macro = ~RM4.7k*
D40 kit + Nikkor 105mm VR micro = ~RM4.8k*

D80 body + cheap Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D = ~RM3.6k*
D40 kit + expensive Sigma 30mm f/1.4 = ~RM3.6k*
*Rough estimation pricing!

Just my 2 cents! icon_rolleyes.gif

i disagree. it is a DSLR for cryin' out loud. there's plenty of people who use D40 / D40x with non-stock lens and they still snap great pictures.
AbangCorp
i dunno why gold fries really want to be overprotected

hey, if you do like autofocus, you rarely manual focus (macro for example)
so your choice should not be d40, thats for sure

i read back again, chewlf looks like have make a decision not to buy d40
then don't buy, your choice ma man

i would like to second anybody ask you not to buy d40, sorry trade enforcer

go here, great d50 pics

LOL. sorry la. was a typo there, i removed a few words but forgot to remove the words "I other"

the original sentence was like "and i can say other Canon users will think that TS should go Canon as well."

basically my point is that EVERYONE will recommend something. Pentax users will recommend their Pentax. Sony users will recommend their Sony. same goes to Oly and Fuji.

Why? because they have good experience and have no problems recommending. smile.gif

Added on November 20, 2007, 5:12 pmoh btw - D50 is a good camera. smile.gif I was looking for it before i got my 350D as well. No one selling that time. sad.gif

D50 is kinda rare nowadays. Hardly understand why Nikon stop producing em and replace it with the crappy d40 and d40x instead
goldfries
Yeah. Well i was hunting for D50 like about 10 months ago, even that time hard to find. smile.gif So good until no one letting go.

D40 was released then not my taste la. 6MP only. my prosumer already 6MP so i opt for something with higher MP.

It was rare back then but now with many new models around, i think it should be easier to find........ i think.
