Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 .... around RM1.3k
Tamron 18-250 and Sigma 18-200 are slow lens. Bad chromatic aberration also.

depends on ur shooting need the new sigma 18-200 OS is a good walkaround lens
if u need a faster lens as ur kit lens replacement, try tamron 17-50 f2.8, good for low light
if u r not confidence of the 3rd party lense and wanted canon brand, 17-85 IS will be your next choice

I'm getting both 18-200 OS and 17-50 f2.8.
The 18-200 OS comes first in my list.

Sigma 17-50 f/2.8?
Which one are you refering? Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 HSM or Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8?

Either way, both also are great lens!

sorry for my mistake, its the 18-50 f2.8 HSM

Tamron is a nice lens too, just that it has issues about its aperture not being constant.
Still, my vote goes to the 2nd hand 17-40L

No doubt there's hardly any 3rd party lenses can be on par with red or gold ring lenses!

get 2nd hand ma, 1.9k, 1 year old. If its very good condition, why not? lens are long term investments. Get the best lens that you can really utilize it alot. He's using it as a replacement for his kit lens, so the range was about the same.

Yupe, you are very right, but still its all depends to him on which kind of lenses he need most, all rounder 18-200 lenses, fast f/2.8 lenses or luxurious high optical quality
L lenses.

The Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 is has constant aperture. I don't know about Canon's version, but for Sony/Minolta version... it has better quality compare to Sigma 18-50mm F2.8... and cheaper by few hundred bucks too.

It does make a bit of different, but the OS function make the lens usable at any length by handheld compared to Tamron. The Sigma lens should cost about RM1.8k, I think.

I used to have the Tamron 17-50 and 70-300. Sold both and bought the Sigma 18-200 OS. Not bcoz the Tamron 17-50 was not a good lens, in fact, for me it was a very good lens . The Sigma suits my shooting style and i dont like having overlapping focal length zoom lenses . Maybe 1 day i'll get the Tamron 17-50 again if i shoot a lot of low light indoor shooting where telephoto range is not needed
Now i'm a happy person with the Sigma. Bought it from J-One for RM1.75k

i've read reviews - rather bad ones actually - which proves the tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 to be a rather weak one...
dispite all the limelight the 17-50mm is getting, they recommended the tamron 17-35mm f/2.8~f/4 instead
i seem to get better pictures out of the 17-35mm actually...

Well, there are factors that come into consideration when comparing the 17-50 with 17-35. The price of it and its versatility. But I'd say its not fair to be comparing these 2 lenses, both are totally different!

are you using this lense at the moment? how it is, ppl said when taking photo using AI Servo setting the movement off the lense is very slow...is that true? thank

Nov 18 2007, 06:58 PM
i haven't tested on AI Servo
However yesterday I had an outing snapping paintball action and I'm damn pleased with it.
thanks for reminding me though. why didn't i think of that!

always forgot to use AI servo when needed! luckily yesterday was newbie action so minimal action and plenty of time to compose even with mask on.
AF is still faster than my Tamron 70-300mm la.

the main reason some of my shots go off focus is that i'm viewing like 5 - 10 cm away from view finder, focusing go off like crazy.
later will post the pics in my gallery.

I have a tamron 17-50 f2.8 and also a nikkor 18-200 VR which would be in many ways similar to the sigma 18-200 OS.
I have to say, both are wonderful lenses that make wonderful images. Quality wise the tamron 17-50 f2.8 is wonderful and gives me wonderful images with the 18-200 falling only a little short.
To tell the truth I can't really decide between the two, I love both of them and I use each for different occasions. I grab the 18-200 when I need longer reach and the 17-50 when I want the shallow DOF and faster speed of an f2.8.
Go for either the 18-200 or 17-50 depending on what kind of shooting you think you will be doing.. but both have proved to be very satisfying lenses..
I can;t say much for others since I havent personally tested any of them.

I'm definitely getting the 17-50 f2.8 but that's later on.

it's not the next on my list either.
Most important is that your lens cater for your shooting style.
for the 18-200 OS
at
18mm - f3.5
28mm - f4.0
35mm - f4.5
50mm - f5.0
the OS would definitely be helpful in low-light condition.

Last time, almost everyone were adoring Nikon user for having the Nikkor 18-200mm VR, an all-rounder walkabout VR lens, but now, seems like the Sigma 18-200mm OS have taken over the market with its lower pricing!
