Personally, I hate neck strap. I tried to like it, but it's really annoying to me in many sense:
1) it always gets in the way
2) difficult to have the camera hanging around and not knocking on things
If you carefully examine many pro photographers who hang their camera(s) around them, the cameras and lenses are usually quite beat up on close inspection. I value my camera and lenses and I hate to have them knock on things. And by definition of pro photographers here, it is photographers who use their equipments to make $$, and also take good pictures.
So, do you like neck strap? I'm dumping my optech pro strap coz it is just so damn annoying...I love my camera without straps or anything on it, but I'm thinking of getting a hand strap in case the camera slips off my hand for whatever reasons.

at first I thought you're doing away with anything even related to a strap. I feel like its dumping you're healt insurance. But the handstrap like those used on handy cams are a good alternative. Also gives you a more secure and tighter grip onto the camera. But for the moment, Im still happy with my NECKstrap. Just learnt a new way of setting the loops so its less annoying now. Also helps me when changing lenses on the go.
Will be looking into the handstrap as well.

I love my neckstrap so much, hanging the camera on the neck, carrying on the shoulder and also wraping around my hand, I feels so secured with it around!

Yes. Its better to reduce the weight so you're more focus on shooting than holding

. Thats why I love my lens. But then, if you need the bigger apeture/quality and the lens reached 1.5kg for the same focal length, the neckstrap there is just like a safety chord. You won't wanna hang the whole weight on your neck, you'd prefer to handhold the cam but need the strap for security reasons only....

. Im only hoping that with the advancement in technology, that long focal length lenses will be lighter in the future. There are 3rd party straps right?... You're using it?... much better than the NIKON ones?
O.T: Regarding the weight reduction thingy, AFAIK....CaNon did release a line of high range/cost premium lenses with the green ring instead of the RED ring of the L lenses. Diffractic Optics its called to help reduce weight and size of the lenses while maintaining L Lense quality. But seems like not very popular....

I always hang the camera with the neckstrap around my neck, but still hold/grip the camera in my hands when i'm walking around. i don't let the camera just hang like that.

Yes. Its always better to have a hand holding the body to avoid it flapping around. Which is probably why all the pros have scratched and dented lenses.

I'm using the optech pro strap....well I was using it for some occasions until I got sien of it because many times my cam almost hit on poles, cars, and etc. When I use the strap, I usually hang it around my neck and hold it with my hands too. Better than nikon's? it is more comfy since the whole thing is neoprene padded...if u mount a 70-200mm on ur camera + grip + flash + stock strap...i think ur neck will start to hurt after 30 mins.
I only shoot up to 150mm now (200mm on film) and that lens is about 900g after removing the tripod mount. My 85mm is only 550g, 50mm is 220g, and the 17-50 is 400g+. My previous heaviest lens was 1.4kg

whole camera loaded with flash was about 3kg...after weight reduction, both my wallet and camera are now lighter

I want to try a hand strap...they are cheap (not the nikon branded one), and it also provides some safety over the cam falling off.

i would say i face the problem as alamaklor... always almost knock things if you hang it around your neck and waling here and there...
my nikon d40's ori neck strap is too short...so at times when wanna shoot high angle or low angle very irritating... i using the neck strap to coil it around my hand better...hehe...

Pros don't mind having their gears damaged as most probably their gears are sponsored.

I think there are hand straps for dSLRs with battery grips. You are refering to those, no?

I don't find my cam bumping into things too much.. normally when i sling it around my neck, i would grip with one hand anyway.
For moments i foresee i won't be needing the camera, i sling it on top of one shoulder blade and across my body (below my other shoulder blade) while the cam is turned upside down and placed on my back....that way camera rests tight to the body & is pretty comfortable (i think i'm describing it really terribly, so not sure if anyone understands)

but yes.. it does get in the way especially when mounting on tripod and on portrait position... seems to like blocking the viewfinder at times.

For my case, neckstrap is very important for me. Since I having EOS 40D & 30D for my photo job.
For most of my photo event, 30D will be my 2nd body and always hanging on my side or my back..

The only thing is don't let these 2 body hang together, while in the photo job. If not, they will keep on bang to each other and you will feel the pain..

its true. thats why i told my students not to carry the camera with the strap at the side using their arm... but instead, sling it over their head like a japanese tourist.

I certainly prefer letting my cam hang from the neck strap. Provides ease in movement and less hand stress in the long run due to the heft of my lens. It also provides me with a way to single hand change my lenses, i generally let the cam dangle while i change the lense with my right hand and rummage through my bag.
My only complaint is that some straps aren't long enough to cross sling comfortably across my shoulder as i prefer the weight on my shoulders rather than on my neck lol. And it's in my view that stuff is bought for enjoyment and thus full use, thus a little dent or two isn't bad, heck my 350 looks like it got into a fight with Wolverine and won

Plus the use of a large lense hood is a great way to avoid scrapes as it keeps the main body and lense away from potential dents due it's size, but it'll look horrible afterwards tho.

thats what tripods are for. whack them with it la. manfrotto tripods are damn heavy.
hehehe.
anyway, when i use my friend's d80, i feel much more secure with a neck strap.
and when used correctly, can help reduce shake abit.

i have 2 bodies and both of em are on neckstrap. sometimes i do hang both around my neck with the 70200mm, grip and flash and its like a major pain in ur neck literally.. The 2 bodies always bumping each other but i have no choice cos i use different lens on those bodies..
I'm more comfortable if i can hold the cams tight while shooting (that's when i shud be using the handstrap), and also so that i can hang them around my neck when changing to the other body..
so, is it posibble to leave the stock neckstrap and install additional handstrap at the same body? anyone ever done this b4?

It is possible to use neck n hand strap togather but it's not convinient as too many straps will get in the way while you want to shoot. i prefer hand-strap (and am using it) anyday but looks strange coz not many ppl using it. just my 2 cents

I don't understand why neckstrap is not good. Come on. Next strap is for protection. You have to hold your camera with your hand when you move. You don't just leave it hanging there.

I always use a neckstrap, feel more secure that way. sometimes i just have it wrap around my wrist for quick shots, if gonna be shooting for longer period of time, its on my neck. The only time the neckstrap is off is when I am using a tripod and shooting at home.
wanted to get a hand grip but realise that with the batter grip installed, I can't use the hand grip when shooting portrait

Not the best thing as it can be a distraction for me but once you are running around with two camera bodies, the neck strap is a must. Most of the time main body with prime will be around my neck while the other body with the wide angle lens will be on my right shoulder.

Better to have neck strap. For me, since I only have 1 camera at anytime, a neck strap is good. Although when travelling, at times it is very inconvenience... for example... when u squad down to wear your shoes... squad down to look at something for sell... usually your camera will swing here and there and you just worry it knocks onto something.
My last camera, E500, when I took away the strap... my goodness. I feel naked. Feel like at anytime, some bugger can come and snatch it away. Feel like at anytime, I can drop it on the floor. Feel like at anytime, someone might bump onto me and I lose grip on it and drop on the floor.
So... for me, it feels safer to have it hung on my neck.

i like my neckstrap. i find it useful as it frees my hands.

however, there are times when i just don't like it. like, say, when standing under the hot sun. the standard neckstrap that comes with my 400D just gets too hot to be bearable.

Neck strap is important to me.. without it.. my hand's gonna feel the pain after few hours of holding it. And also when someone tries out your dslr, i always ask them to put on the neck strap first, just in case they drop the dslr. haha..
