Hi, hope this thread not been created yet.
This PenangFon will start their 2Mbps fiber optic ADSL service on 1st October, 2005 but only available to 4 condominium in Penang.
Guess wat, the charge only RM60 for 2Mbps!!! And no tel line is needed.
Streamyx will doom !!
More info pls visit www.penangfon.com
Dunno when this service will come to my place

If got many good feedback on this broadband and it expand its service area, then i'll definitely close the Screamyx
So, any comment on this broadband service? Will the Terrorkom allow they to be so competitive in term of price?

According to their website, they'll pull a cable from the riser until your house unit. Something about direct connection, not too sure how they're implementing it.
It might be good news for those living in fibre-installed condominiums (like me, can't install Streamyx because of fibre, bla bla...). I hope they roll out to more locations soon, but then again, I probably won't be at the condo by then, who knows hehe.

Q: The DSL providers say that other Broadband Connections are "shared" and will slow down when too many people in my neighborhood come online. Is that true?
A: Thank you for asking. Truth is, all Internet access, including DSL, are shared and no one can guarantee or control speed, due to variables inherent to the Internet. What the DSL companies want you to believe is that other Broadband connection will slow down when more users come online and that DSL does not slow down because it is "dedicated". There are two other things you should know about DSL and speed.
DSL slows down the further you live from their facilities.
DSL's "dedicated" connection is only for the short distance between your home and their facilities. From that point on, it is pooled with all other traffic. This shows that DSL is also Shared.
It is one of PenangFON's major priorities to take all the appropriate steps regarding design, management and capacity that maintain a high-quality, high-speed online experience for our subscribers. <top>
wahaha.....eventhough dsl shared..but tmnet have enough capacity from dslam to the net...this fon thing.....2mbps from the building to the internet..it is interesting how they twist this..

I see that their transit providers are NTT/Arcnet and Pacific Internet (of Singapore). This will be good news to their subscribers, as it means that they won't have to contend for the same congested circuits the Streamyx users are.

FYI - doing a traceroute to the PenangFON's website isn't the best way to figure out their backbone. In fact, I do believe that 202.73.10.131 is located well within Klang Valley. And I know for a fact that NTT/ArcNet does not have any point-of-presence in Penang. But of course, that isn't to say that they're not using ArcNet for their backbone, although it should be pointed out that all traffic from PenangFON will ultimately be routed down to the Klang Valley....

Yups. I dug that one up too last night. If you dig further, you'll find that OCE has ASP/NSP/NFP individual licenses to operate broadband services. So this implies that PenangFON, is in fact, a service riding on top of OCE's infrastructure.
Unfortunately, all these don't really tell us everything about PenangFON's backbone per say, unless you have some clue to the IP addresses assigned to the apartments whose services are provided by PenangFON.
But anyway, I won't be surprised if OCE had laid a fiber link from Penang to NTT-MSC in Cyberjaya (or one of their POPs)...

We already have similar setups in our country by companies like MyKris and Bizsurf.Services offered by small startups like these will never be able to compete with the likes of TM and Jaring unless they are prepared to do charity. They will never be able to subscribe sufficient bandwidths from Tier-1 providers across the globe. What they will normally do is they'll buy lines from available bandwidth wholesalers that are available in our country and resell them.
There is no way they can beat TMnet/Jaring in terms cost/bandwidth reliability ratio.Even Jaring's ADSL which is actually a customer of TM's Wholesale unit has to charge more for their ADSL service(RM99 for first 2GB) and this provider provides 2mbps for RM60?
They NEVER said anything that their lines are dedicated/not shared if you have read their FAQ properly. It makes them even more unprofessional to compare DSL with their technology and it seems that their FAQ was written by some amateur. At that kind of pricing, there is a high probability that they'll oversell their bandwidths to make ends meet. It's not a new idea in our market. If it's ain't profitable we won't call this business.
That's why I would like to conclude that our telecoms sector is saturating today though it may seem to be interesting to many.

What I understand is some of their previous coverage/clients have all been transfered to BizSurf.
