i'm thinking of changing my LP-100 stock pick up to EMG-HZ or Seymour Duncan SH-12......and leave the neck pick up slot empty... what u guys think of it....
*

You mean you want to change only one pickup ? blink.gif

If you are then .... it looks weird having one pickup slot empty .... its like wearing one shoe instead of a pair ...

I think it will effect your sound too ..... coz you cant use the 3 switch selector

zzub, you can either
- remove the neck pickup (visual impact ? look cool IMO... sound impact ? well, you have only one left available pickup so it reduces your 'versatility')
- keep the neck pickup (it won't alter the sound of you bridge pickup at all, as long as your pickup selector is set on "lead". If you set to the middle position or to "rythm", then the neck pickup is used).

If you use only the bridge pickup, i'd say you remove the neck pickup.. your guitar would look more 'extreme'. And according to the kind of pickup you want to put in, you don't mind looking more extreme laugh.gif

Thanks Man for the advice thumbup.gif i'll consider which is the best for my LP....

and about the "extream look" thing....never cross my mind before.. biggrin.gif mybe u juz give me some idea....Thanks again icon_rolleyes.gif

Review done by Everdying:

QUOTE
"I've been messing with the EMGs i got, two 81s and one 85.
81/81 combo is my least fav with both positions somehow sounding almost the same.
81(n)/85(b) is the most balanced sounding, suprisingly the 85(b) didnt add as much low end as i expected it to but it still sounded marginally better than with a 81 in bridge, while the 81 in neck still had its trebley sound coming thru.
the 85(n)/81(b) had the most tonal differences with the 85(n) really pushing all the low end out, and with the right settings it can pull off some decent blues stuff...
both 81 and 85 in the bridge performed just as well, good enough for metal rhythm work and piercing solos.
but the 81 in the neck is a definite no.

dont you just love the plug n play of EMGs

and from all that, i'm thinking a 85/85 combo would be a very good match."

i dint know tat there's activ electric guitar pickup!! drool.gif
wow!! how it works?

how the EQ looks like?

any1 hav picture of an activ pickup installed on guitars? drool.gif
blacktrix
Ummmmmmm...... Active pickups means that it generates so much output, it requires it's own power source in the form of a regular 9V Square Battery. Probably the most famous Active Pick-ups are the ones from EMG..... the EMG81/85 combo is used by most top metal players like Metallica, Trivium and yes..... Zakk Freakin' Wylde. Alot of us forum members have active pickups installed...... I have the EMG-ZW set which is basically an EMG 81 and an EMG 85 sold together as a combo.

I think you're confusing it with an Active Pre-amp pickup that is found on an acoustic guitar.

Just an ordinary pickup with a preamp powered by a battery... that's all.

Whether it sounds good, it depends on preference. You either love them and think that they're the bomb or hate them to death. Apparently there isn't a middle ground. tongue.gif No prize guessing which side I'm standing on. icon_rolleyes.gif

u can't choose pickups by brand la friend...
u should know what u want then only get...
dun decide on brand then the sound it produces.
look around la.. ask people who have emg, duncans, dimarzios...
if u can try their guitar better still.. it may sound different on ur guitar because of action and ur body's wood but at least u get an idea of how it will sound like.

no discussions about piezo PUs?

I was thinking of building a solid bass body with piezo bridge pickups and no onboard electronics. (kind of like the Line 6 Variax minus the Variax)

Then you could theoretically play with contrabass strings...hahahah

Wonder what sound will come out leh? rolleyes.gif

cincai screw some wood together oni la...hahaha
It's just for the sake of experimenting. I want to see how "true" piezos can sound. I am striving towards a contrabass sound on a fretless. With magnetic PUs cannot even come close due to the steel strings. So i wanted to try piezos to see if i can get closer with contrabass strings or not...

just rewired my pup configurations

now at pos 2-4 the sc and hums are out of phase which gives a really funny quaky countryish/mark knophler(?) sound

led_zep_freak
Mark Knopfler... biggrin.gif

Eh, your hums comes with 4 conducter wires right? Didn't you wire it so that you could reverse the polarity with a switch when you installed your pups?
evo.com
well i dont know about that....
i think ive already maxed out my options with a push pull and a dpdt...
gonna everything for now and save up for a new amp thumbup.gif

I read somewhere that active PUs not only increase the signal output, it also helps to regulate the signal strength.

Referring to bass PUs... When u turn the volume knob down the high freqs (10 kHz) get cut out by the standard fender Precis and Jazzes. But on active basses, the high freqs still come through on low volume. How does an active PU achieve this?

And apparently there are active PUs and passive PUs with active on board preamps.... Whats the difference? Do active PUs use electromagnets instead of permanent magnets? If they use electromagnets then 9V generates a pretty weak magnetic field if i'm not wrong...
Also, whats the difference between 18V system and 9V system? (besides MORE POWER!!!)

soooo manyy quesstionnnsss whistling.gif

*EDIT* missing sentence.... doh.gif
Everdying
yea active PUs have a very weak magnetic field, thats what the preamp is for to boost signal.
also basses have active eqs.
active eq eg it adds treble when you turn treble knob, rather than passive which cuts bass instead to make it sounds more trebley.
18v system you get more headroom, the pickup sounds more open etc.
