I just bought a new 64b system last week. Bought an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ system. Anyway, my friend told me that in order to fully exploit the 64b architecture, I needed to install the x64 edition of the Windows XP Pro.
But what worries is that, will the 32b softwares be compatible with it? How about gaming? My inputs' drivers ( ie scanner, camera) will be compatible? My MATLAB ver7.0.4 will be able to run it?? unsure.gif I'm using my new system mainly for my FYP and other projects.
SubKi||er
Not sure about MATLAB but 64-bit windows does have 32-bit support so i think it would run but the only thing is you have to get all the hardware drivers in 64-bit in order for all hardware to run normally...
i love mac OS
i think no need to install all 64-bit hardware driver to run normally becoz amd 64 still support 32-bit architecture, that means it still run normally for 32-bit software........so i think it also can run 32-bit hardware driver

There are some applications/drivers are known to be imcompatible with 64 bit architecture

Look here for more info...i'm not sure about the accuracy though

wait for the Longhorn 64 Bit OS.
If a AMD 64Bit CPU (32Bit and 32Bit compatible ), you still can install 32Bit XP OS on the system

smile.gif Started install WinXP x64 on 12pm, and just finish reinstalling all my apps back just now. Damn, it took me half day to work on it.

anyway, here's a brief review by me. System specs as below:

AMD64 2800+ running on 1810MHz
MSI K8N Neo3-F 7135 (socket 754)
Kingston 512MB ddr400
Maxtor 80GB SATA HDD
MSI NX6600 128MB
Sony CD-ROM
LG GSA-4163b dvd-writter
Liteon external combo drive

The copy i got on hand is the final version (not RCs or Betas) together with the MUI (Multilingual User Interface) pack on another CD. The installation won't run if you insert the disc on current Windows. An error will pop out notifying you that you need to do a clean installation (cannot be upgraded from current versions of Windows)

Before you start your installation, do remember to download all your hardware drivers! For mine, i got it from:
Processor, motherboard -> http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/down...?UID=642&kind=1
graphics card - > ForceWare 66.96 x64
the rest all using default windows driver

Then everything looks like normal WinXP installation. yawn.gif Well, except the boot screen will be a black screen (as usual) with a line "Windows XP Professional x64 Edition".

And suprisingly, none of my Antivirus/Firewalls work on the new platform. F-prot, ZoneAlarm, Sygate, all failed and rolled back during the installation. F-prot manage to install itself but it gives an error everytime i boot my windows, so had to uninstall it. Now using Avast 4.6 which is x64 compatible.

Now my hardwares were all compatible except 2: my 56k dialup modem and my HP 1010 laserjet. doh.gif Haha, i even got my Logitech MOMO Racing running with its official x64 driver!

Some screenies:

1. System Info (x64, but dunno why no more "Physical Extension bla bla")
user posted image

2. The strange twin IE, haha. one in 32-bit and another is 64-bit. And suprise, the windows update also come with 2 version. WTH... doh.gif
user posted image

3. The task manager is slightly different too. Now it is able to differentiate which process belongs to 32-bit platform and which is x64.
user posted image

Now waiting for the HP laserjet driver, and hopefully it won't ake long. After 1 hour of test run, from my experience Adobe Photoshop CS2 runs faster than last time. The rest of the apps like Office, Mozilla are still the same. I can tell you that there is not much difference before and after the upgrade. sweat.gif

some confirmed working apps:
1. Mozilla Firefox v1.06
2. Java J2SE v5.06 (it runs on IE 64-bit)
3. Nero 6.0.0.16
4. Msoft Office 2003

p/s: strange enough, there is no toolbar for WMP anymore sad.gif . wth once again...
LittleLinnet
anyone teach me how to install it ??
the version i got is unbootable with CD......and yes, i am a noobie and i dunno how
yrh0413
you can't install it if yoour version is not bootable, as it won't install on top of your current Windows. You need to reformat your drive and do a clean installation.

Btw, how on earth did you get an "unbootable" version? huh.gif If you don't know how, follow the steps below:

1. Restart your com, enter BIOS by pressing the Delete key (may differ from other BIOS, juz check which key brings you to the BIOS page)
2. Set your first boot to CD-ROM
3. Save settings and let it reboot again. The system will run the disk if the Cd-ROM inserted is bootable.

blush.gif stick with your 32-bit. a lot of antivirus and firewalls don't work on x64. Moreover most of my drivers are in Beta hence i experiene some random reboots.

laugh.gif trust me, x64's interface is 100% same wif the usual XP. This is not Vista
amacharu
my advice is, don't upgrade if you can't find any compatible 64-bit driver. and please take note that older 16-bit applications will not work.

maybe we should wait for a few monthes until more drivers and softwares are 64-bit compatible

Yes..Indeed.. is XP interface (Windows XP 64bit).. not Vista.. (when Vista launching?)

i dont think using a 64bit OS is a good idea for now...
most of the software are not supported by 64bit.. my friend bought a Acer Ferrari laptop.. it come with 64bit OS.. and the problem is tht... she cant install real player to watch movie.. including other softwares...

stick to 32bit OS for now... and upgrade later smile.gif

No, you are 100% wrong in this. hardware and software are not the same. The OS needs to use a 64bit driver for the hardware, but for using software, we can use 32bit software.

What is still in demo? XP Pro 64bit is now available and hardware manufacturers now have 64bit drivers around.

XP Pro64bit was released a few months ago FYI. It's not in retail yet, but is available for exchange if you own a legal WinXP.

Vista will release end of next year (might change if MS can't stick to their schedule).

Software, yes most are not natively compatible, but as I said earlier, it have backward compatibility for 32bit applications.

i seems to have problem installing the EPSON Stylus Photo 830, can anyone help me with that???
tuckker
Look for the 64bit driver for your printer. If you can find it, install it.

If you can't find it, means that there's no 64bit driver for your Epson (i dind't check epson website for you).

If you can install it, but it's not working, please provide me more info.
